Typed an Instruction but AI Did Not Answer What You Wanted?
It is like calling a stranger and saying, “Please help,” without explaining what you need. An instruction without context leaves AI with no choice but to guess.
The more detail you give, the closer the result will be to what you want. You do not need to know any technical terms.
A good prompt means telling AI clearly: who you are, what you need, and what kind of result you want.
The 3 Parts of an Effective Prompt
1. Context: Who You Are and What the Situation Is
AI does not know you beforehand. Tell it what you do, who you are talking to, or what the situation is.
Examples of helpful context:
I own a small restaurant with 5 employees.I need to send a report to my boss tomorrow morning.I am preparing for a meeting with a new customer I have never met before.
The clearer the context, the more the AI’s answer will fit your real situation.
2. Task: What You Want It to Do
State clearly whether you want it to write, summarize, translate, analyze, compare, or explain. Avoid broad phrases like “help me” or “do this for me.”
Clear examples:
Please write a thank-you email to a customer. Please summarize this article in 5 sentences. Please compare the pros and cons of these two options.
3. Format: What Kind of Result You Want
Tell it the tone, length, or format you want. If you do not say, AI will choose for you, and it may not match what you need.
Format examples:
Keep it short, no more than 3 sentences.Use a friendly, informal tone.Break it into an easy-to-read list.Answer in Thai without technical jargon.
A Full Prompt Example
Bring the 3 parts together:
Context: I am a sales manager. I need to send a thank-you email to a customer who just bought expensive software.
Task: Please write a thank-you email and say that the team is always ready to help.
Format: Make it friendly but professional, no more than 4 sentences.
Ready-made prompt:
I am a sales manager. A customer just bought expensive software from us. Please write a thank-you email and say that the team is always ready to help. Make it friendly but professional, no more than 4 sentences.
7 Examples: Before and After Improving the Prompt
| Task | Weak Prompt | Strong Prompt |
|---|---|---|
| Write an email | ”Write a thank-you email" | "Write a thank-you email to a customer who bought something. Make it friendly, no more than 3 sentences.” |
| Summarize an article | ”Summarize this" | "Summarize this article in 5 sentences, focusing on what business owners need to know.” |
| Explain a hard word | ”Explain inflation" | "Explain inflation for someone who did not study economics. Use examples from everyday life.” |
| Make a plan | ”Help me plan" | "Help me plan exercise 3 days a week for a 45-year-old who wants to work out at home and not get too exhausted.” |
| Write a caption | ”Write a food caption" | "Write a caption for a shrimp fried rice photo for a restaurant Facebook post. Make it appetizing, include emojis, and keep it under 2 lines.” |
| Compare options | ”Compare iPhone and Samsung" | "Compare iPhone 15 and Samsung S24 for someone who mainly takes photos, wants something easy to use, and has a budget under 30,000 baht.” |
| Solve a problem | ”Help solve a problem" | "My employees are often late. I am the manager and have already talked to them, but it has not improved. Suggest a way to handle this without hurting the team atmosphere.” |
3 Things That Make a Prompt Fail
Too short, so AI has to guess: “Write this for me” without saying what to write, who it is for, or what tone to use. AI will choose on its own, and it often misses the mark.
Asking for too many things in one instruction: If you want several things, separate them into multiple prompts. For example, ask it to summarize first, then ask it to translate afterward.
Always accepting the first result: If the result is not right yet, tell it in the same chat. Type “Make it shorter” or “Change the tone to be more formal.” You do not need to start over.
Step-by-Step Example: From a Bad Prompt to a Good Prompt
Situation: You need to send an email to a customer who complained about a damaged product.
Step 1: First prompt (bad):
Write an apology email to a customer.
Result: The email is too generic, sounds AI-written, has no context, and is not usable.
Step 2: Add context:
I own an online shop. A customer received a damaged product. Write an apology email.
Result: Better, but it still does not say how the issue will be fixed.
Step 3: Add the task and format:
I own an online shop. A customer's product was damaged during delivery. Write a sincere apology email. Say that we will send a replacement within 3 days. Make it friendly but professional, no more than 4 sentences.
Result: You get a draft you can use right away. Edit it slightly and send it.
Step 4: Adjust if it is still not enough:
Better, but make it a little warmer and add that the customer can choose a refund instead if they prefer.
Result: You get a complete version.
This whole process takes no more than 5 minutes, compared with writing it yourself, which might take 20-30 minutes.
3 Ways to Adjust When the Result Is Not Good Enough
Say directly what you do not like: “It is too long. Cut it in half,” or “It is too formal. Make it more relaxed.” AI will adjust immediately.
Add an example of what you want: If you cannot explain it clearly, copy an example you like and say, “I want something like this.” AI often understands this better than a long explanation.
Ask AI to help improve the prompt: Type, “What information should I add so you can answer this better?” Sometimes AI knows better than we do what is missing.
7 Ready-to-Use Templates by Task Type
Copy and use them right away. Just change the parts inside [ ].
Write an email:
[I am...] I need to send a [thank-you/apology/follow-up] email to [who] about [what]. Make it [tone: friendly/formal], no more than [3/5] sentences.
Summarize a document:
Summarize this document in [5/7] sentences, focusing on what [business owners/executives/beginners] need to know.
Translate and explain:
Translate this text into Thai and explain what it means. Use plain everyday language and include an example from daily life.
Ask for ideas:
I [situation] need [3/7] ideas for [goal]. The conditions are [constraints].
Compare options:
Compare [option A] and [option B] in terms of [price/risk/convenience], then recommend which one to choose if [condition].
Write a caption/post:
Write a caption for [what kind of photo] on [LINE/Facebook/Instagram]. Make the tone [funny/touching/appetizing], include [emojis], keep it under [2] lines, and give me 3 versions.
Make a plan:
Help me plan [what] for [who] over [how long]. The limitation is [what]. Break it into [3/7] steps.
Prompts in Thai: Useful to Know
You do not need to type in English. AI understands Thai well, but these things can improve the result:
Tell it the language style you want: “Use formal Thai,” or “Use friendly spoken Thai,” or “Use simple words that adults 60+ can understand.”
Ask it to answer in Thai if it replies in English: Sometimes AI switches languages. Just type, “Answer entirely in Thai, except for loanwords that have no Thai translation.”
Specify the vocabulary to use: If you want to avoid difficult words, say, “Use simple words and explain every difficult term you use.”
The 3 Most Useful Prompts: Save These
When you do not know how to start:
I need [result], but I do not know how to begin. Please ask me first what extra information you need.
AI will ask questions to understand the task instead of guessing and answering incorrectly.
When you want several options:
[Normal request] Give me 3 different versions: formal, friendly, and the shortest possible version.
You get several options to compare and choose from in one step.
When you want advice on something you wrote yourself:
Here is the [email/report/proposal] I wrote: [paste]. Please tell me what I should improve and why.
You get advice with reasons, making it easier to improve the exact parts that need work.
3 Closing Sentences You Can Use Every Time
If you cannot think of the context, try adding these 3 sentences after your question. They always help.
First, type “Explain it simply, like you are talking to someone who is just starting out” so the answer avoids difficult terms.
Second, type “Please include examples” so you can picture it clearly.
Third, type “If you do not understand the question, you can ask me a follow-up question” so AI asks for more information instead of guessing.
An Easy Formula to Remember
Context + task + format = an effective prompt
Try it first with a simple email, and you will feel the difference yourself.
Update box: What Makes Prompt Writing Easier Right Now (June 2026)?
This section contains information that changes according to the AI’s capabilities and will be updated regularly. The core concepts above will always apply.
AI is now better at guessing what you want. Even if you do not explain everything, it may ask follow-up questions or make a closer guess. Still, giving context, task, and format remains the best way to get strong results.
New helpful features include giving instructions by voice and attaching files or images as context, which makes it easier than typing everything.
