Want to Try ChatGPT but Have Never Opened It Even Once?
You may have heard the name for a long time, but still not be sure how to begin. This article walks you through it step by step, from signing up to actually chatting with AI today.
The whole process takes about 10 minutes.
7 Steps to Start Using ChatGPT
Step 1: Sign Up for an Account at ChatGPT.com
Open your browser, type chatgpt.com, and click Sign up.
There are 3 ways to sign up:
- Google account: the fastest, done with one click
- Microsoft account: if you already use Outlook
- Email: sign up with a regular email address and enter a verification code
Recommendation: Use a Google account. It is the easiest and you do not need to remember a new password.
Step 2: Choose the Package That Fits You
ChatGPT has 2 main levels:
| Free | Plus (around $20/month) | |
|---|---|---|
| Usage | Quota by time period | Much higher |
| Model | Basic model | Best model + deep reasoning model |
| Speed | Slower during busy periods | Faster |
| Files and images | Limited | Full access |
For beginners: Start with the free package first. It is genuinely useful and does not cost anything. Once you are comfortable, then consider Plus.
Step 3: Get to Know the ChatGPT Screen
The first time you log in, you will see 3 main parts:
Left sidebar: A list of older conversations. Click any one to go back and read it.
Typing box in the middle of the screen: This is where you type your questions.
New chat button at the top: Click this when you want to start a new conversation on a separate topic.
Step 4: Type Your First Question
Click the typing box, type anything you want to ask, then press Enter or click the send icon.
Good first questions for beginners:
Please suggest easy breakfasts I can make in 15 minutes without complicated equipment.Explain Bitcoin to me in everyday language. Please write a sincere LINE message thanking a friend who helped me with work.I need to talk with my teenage child about studying. Please suggest a way to start the conversation without making them stressed.Recommend good books for someone age 50+ who wants to understand the business world better. Please help me plan housework for this week. I only have time on Saturday and Sunday.Explain what a prompt is in language that someone who does not know AI can understand.
The more directly you ask, the more relevant the answer will be. Tell AI what you need, just like talking to a very knowledgeable friend.
Step 5: Read the Answer and Ask Follow-Up Questions
ChatGPT will type out the answer word by word. Wait until it finishes, then read it.
If the answer is not quite right or you want to know more, type a follow-up in the same box:
Can I have a few more examples? Can you explain this more simply? Is there another way for someone who does not have an oven?
A conversation with ChatGPT is interactive. You can keep asking follow-up questions on the same page.
Step 6: Start a New Conversation When You Change Topics
When you want to ask about a new topic unrelated to the previous one, click New chat in the top-left corner.
Old conversations are saved automatically in the left sidebar. You can come back and read them anytime.
Good to know: Within a single conversation, ChatGPT remembers what you discussed best. Current versions also have a Memory feature that can carry context from older chats across conversations, which you can turn on or off in settings. If you do not want it to remember, use Temporary Chat mode.
Step 7: Search and Manage Conversations
Old conversations are stored in the left sidebar. You can search them with the magnifying glass icon.
3 things you can do with a conversation:
- Rename it: Hover over the title and click the pencil icon to give it a name you can remember
- Share it: Click Share to send a link so someone else can read the conversation
- Delete it: Hover over the title and click the trash icon if you do not want to keep it
3 Mistakes Beginners Often Make
Asking too briefly and feeling disappointed
“Write an email for me” does not tell AI what the email is about, who it is for, or what tone you want. The result will be too generic. Try giving complete context first, and the result will be noticeably different.
Opening a new chat every time you want to ask a follow-up
If you want to continue from something you already discussed, type in the same box. You do not need to open a new chat. ChatGPT remembers context within that same chat. Open a new chat only when you change topics.
Trusting the first result without checking
Always check before passing information on, especially numbers, dates, or names. If the result looks good but you are unsure about part of it, ask ChatGPT, “How confident are you about this information?” It will answer directly.
3 Questions Beginners Often Ask
“Can I type in Thai?”
Yes. ChatGPT understands Thai very well. You do not need to translate into English first. If you want the result in English, you can say, “Answer in English.”
“How long can I use it for free?”
The free version has no time limit, but it does have a daily quota. If you reach the limit, it will ask you to wait or upgrade. For normal light use, the free version is enough.
“If the answer is not right, do I need to start over?”
You can type a follow-up in the same box. Say, “Make it shorter,” or “Make it more formal,” or “The example does not match my situation. Can you try again?” ChatGPT will adjust immediately.
3 Things to Know Before Using It for Real
1. ChatGPT can give incorrect information
AI creates answers from language patterns. Numbers, dates, and specific names should be checked with other sources before being used for real.
2. The information you type may be used to improve the system
Avoid typing sensitive personal information, such as ID card numbers, passwords, or medical information.
3. Information may not be the latest
ChatGPT only has information up to a certain point. It is not always current. For the latest news or events, check real news sources as well.

This section contains information that changes according to the AI’s capabilities and will be updated regularly. The core concepts above will always apply.
Right now, you can sign up for ChatGPT for free on both the web and mobile app. You can register with an email address or Google account. The free version is enough for getting started and for everyday tasks.
The screen and buttons may change from time to time. The core idea is the same: there is a typing box at the bottom where you can start chatting immediately. If the screen looks different from this article, look for the message box first.
